Frequently Asked Questions

The following questions are those most commonly asked, but, if there is anything you would like to know that is not listed here, please don't hesitate to contact us. It should be noted that any advice given here is based on our experience and intended to be helpful, but should not be substituted for veterinary advice. We understand that all information given in regard to testing procedures is currently correct, but accept no responsibility for any inaccuracies.

Are your puppies KC registered?
Yes, all of our puppies are KC registered and, therefore, come with 6 weeks free insurance.
Are your dogs health tested?
Yes, all of our dogs are hip scored and eye tested. In addition, our black Labradors are elbow scored, as this can be even more important than hip scoring in the blacks.
What is hip scoring, elbow scoring and eye testing?
Hip scoring measures 'how good the hip is' on a scale of 0-106 (up to 53 on each hip), 0 being perfect (but very rare!) and 106 being the worst possible score. The breed average for the Labrador currently stands at 15.
Elbow scoring measures 'how good the elbow is' on a scale of 0-3, 0 being perfect and 3 being the worst possible score.
Eye testing is an annual procedure which tests for the following inherited eye diseases:
MRD - Multifocal Retinal Dysplasia
TRD - Total Retinal Dysplasia
GPRA - Generalised Progressive Retinal Atrophy
CPRA - Central Progressive Retinal Atrophy
The result of this eye test is either 'clear' or 'affected'.
Are your puppies wormed and vaccinated?
Our puppies are fully wormed using Drontal Puppy suspension and we recommend that this is continued until your puppy reaches 12 weeks old, following which you should take advice from your vet.
Our puppies are not vaccinated before they leave us because different vets use different vaccines and the same vaccine must be used on each occasion. This way, there is less confusion between our vet and yours, and your own vet can do things his/her own way. If in doubt at all, please feel free to contact us.
Are your puppies well socialised?
Yes, our puppies are very well socialised with adults, children and other adult dogs. They are used to various household noises and, in good weather, play in our large, enclosed garden throughout the day.
At what stage can we come to view the puppies?
The puppies cannot be seen before they are 5 weeks old. This is in an effort to reduce the chances of infection to the litter. Once they are 5 weeks old, you are most welcome to come and meet us, the puppies and both parents. Well-behaved children who respect dogs are also most welcome to accompany you.
When will the puppies be ready to go to their new homes?
The puppies will be ready for collection from 8 weeks old.
What about long-term insurance?
We highly recommend that insurance is taken out on your puppy. The KC provides 6 weeks free insurance with the registration, so this gives you time to search around for the best deal.
What are the puppies fed on?
Our puppies are fed on 'Oscars'. They don't sell their food in shops, but deliver to your door, free of charge, anywhere in the UK. Your nearest stockist can be found on their website: www.oscars.co.uk.
Do you operate a waiting list?
Yes, we do. Please submit an application form to apply for one of our puppies
Do you recommend the use of puppy crates?
Yes, we do. They provide the puppy with a safe haven for lots of sleep and is their own private space where they won't be disturbed. They also have the added advantage of preventing destruction of owners' kitchens at night during the first few months!
